On why Ultima Online was good
Your game is either full PvP or no PvP. Selective PvP = No PvP, just like grimgryphon 's signature states.
When you give carebears a choice, they're always gonna chose the safer server.
UO was good, because **IT DID NOT GIVE THE CAREBEARS A CHOICE**. It forced them to play by the same rules as everyone. They did not like getting killed, but they enjoyed the game overall, so they learned how to adapt to it, how to get used to it.
Truth is, players need to be HERDED and FORCED to do stuff. If presented with the opportunity, 90% of the playerbase would do NOTHING, just wank their tiny little dicks in front of the West Bank, wearing colourful hats, afking 90% of the time and talking about Netflix 10% of the time.
Dunno if you've ever been to the army. Here in russia joining the army is mandatory for all males above 18. But if some of you have. You probably remember not wanting to go there and suffer. Yet after getting used to the early morning drills, to the seargeant shouting in your face, and all the other hardcore stuff, you prolly learned to enjoy it. It's the same with MMOS rly.
All in all, letting the weak, the lazy, the stupid chose and make the rules is the ultimate mistake, for which the ultimate price has to be paid more often than not.
P.S. Does anybody here have any idea, why there was not a single full loot WoW server ever? Was it that fucking hard?
P.P.S. And one more important thing:
Unless you've spent all your fucking childhood hunched in front of a PC, you know, that kids play games in the streets. Football, hide and seek, etc. There are *ALWAYS* strict rules to those games. And most important - kids don't like slackers. They don't like people who make a habit of leaving mid-session, giving up the game, letting down their team maters, spoiling the fun for the rest. They don't like people who break the rules to gain advantage.
Unless you've been lobotomized you are already starting to see the link here.
The modern MMO player wants to be a slacker and a cheater. He doesn't want to put any effort into the game. He doesn't want anything to burden him, he doesn't want to other players to be dependant on his actions. He wants it all easy, and he wants to be able to take a break whenever he wants.
In a *GAME*, this is a bad thing. Imagine all of this happening during a football match. During any game, hide and seek or whatever. People randomly leaving, people switching sides, people letting down their teammates. That's whats spoils any game, including MMORPGS.
So this is the problem of modern MMORPGS in a nutshell. It's up to you what to make of it and how you process this and react to this.
---------------------
In truth, I believe there are many gamers out there who would gladly accept the playstyle SS13 and old UO have. It's just that no games are being made for them. We will never know if we can gather 10 million of true immersive roleplayers to play one game, unless we try.
