First of all, there's nothing preventing a popular pre-trammel-style game from existing.
Second, the moderators here don't like it when we use the word "carebear". Instead you should say "Respected fellow PvE player".
Third, many people seem to be out of touch with logic when they try to explain why there can't be a popular hardcore MMORPG again.
They don't really think about what they say.
They see the fall of the Original UO as a consequence of the people having no interest in hardcore gameplay, which is wrong. it's merely a consequence of EA owning the game and turning it into a cash cow the only way they understood - by making a "carebear" game.
Making dumb mmos for kids is easy and profitable. But that does not mean that a hardcore MMO with all the features of Original UO can't be popular.
Yes, many MMOs who tried somthin like this failed. BUT WHY - because they were hardcore? Or because they were
-poorly balanced
-boring and unattractive atmosphere-wise
?
People tend to believe (without having any evidence or any kind of proof) that those games failed because they were too hardcore.
But they didnt fail because of this. Such games fail for a number of reasons:
-bleak and unattractive virtual world
-weak and boring gameplay mechanics
Overall it seems those who make such games just lack the creativity to make something worthy of the attention of the masses of hardcore gamers.
We want hardcore but we won't just play any ugly piece of..game filled with bugs just because it features full loot.
So...that is my opinion.
