Playing on a Minecraft server with PvP and griefing allowed gives me almost the same feeling as I UO did. Recently I went to a non-griefing server of Minecraft because my favourite server is undergoing maintenance. It was so boring. People were just building stuff for no reason. There was no reason to play because there was nothing to lose.
There was no reason to explore people's buildings because there were no chests to loot and no TNT/lava/gravel traps to fall into and die, marveling at the cruel mind of the one who set those traps in such a fashion that even an experienced looter as myself fell into them.
It truely strikes fear into me how people are given the chance to want to be ANYTHING in a MMO game yet they want to be NOTHING and settle for a boring life of an experience and items farmer bound to do repetitive boring actions in a shallow world with no risk involved and no scams allowed. There must be something wrong with the people of our age. And it is indeed sad that even the Roleplaying community, the guys who are supposed to have imagination and taste for ADVENTURE, are plagued with this too.
It's amazing how UO is a great example of how a MMORPG should be made to be epic.
Too bad most developers lack the imagination and the skills required to do a real game, so they do something crappy instead.
