I had this tought the other day...
A ton of things in the universe are cyclic. The MMO industry might be cyclic too.
We started off with simple 2D games - arkanoid, super mario, etc. Then we moved on to more complex things - sim games, RPGs. Then the 3D era came.
Now it seems we are in the era of simple 3D stuff. MMORPGs are generally quite simplistic. They don't require you to do much or think much. There are a few precious gems here and there (like EVE), but not many.
And if the MMO universe is cyclic too, we might soon be moving on to a new era: an era of great MMORPG games that actually make you live in them, like UO did and like EVE does to a certain extent.
Most people nowadays live with the assumption that nobody needs complex MMOs where you actions actually matter and where there is risk involved in everything you do.
The only way to prove them wrong is to have a new AAA MMORPG project that shows the world that therer are a ton of people who DO care. A project that will actually be flawlessly done AND profitable.
