Today, while browsing Reddit, I stumbled across a post by Raph Koster. Here it is:
Now I beg to differ!
What, in essence, are those two games - H1Z1 and DayZ? They are online multiplayer survival shooters. Well, H1Z1 is more of an MMORPG than the other one.
But we can't compare DayZ to pre-trammel Ultima Online.
See, in Ultima Online, there were several major paths from which one could choose: PvE, PvP, Crafting and Gathering, General roleplaying (baking bread and selling it in town, acting, and so on).
All of those path were self sufficient, which means that you could walk any of those paths for years without ever doing anything else. I've personally know smiths who had never left the guard zone of the city. Or player killers who had not set foot in a town for months.
DayZ, on the other hand, is all about shooting. The main focus of the game is to shoot zombies and other people while surviving. All the other activities - crafting, scavenging, etc - are just additions that surround the main activity - PvE+PvP, and not standalone paths players can walk. This is nowhere near the simulation of a living world that pre-trammel Ultima Online provided.
DayZ is more like post-trammel Felucca - a huge sandbox for all those who want to PvP, without any soft targets to kill.
